The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) at the University of Rochester is an organization that advances academic freedom and shared institutional governance. Our core mission is shaped to align with that of our parent organization and serves to represent the professional interests of all faculty, including but not limited to clinical, instructional, and research faculty, visiting faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, lecturers, adjunct faculty, tenured and tenure-track faculty, and anyone who acts as an instructor at the university in any capacity.
We are guided by our commitment to advancing the standards and ideals of higher education through the AAUP. The chapter abides by the AAUP’s Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure to uphold professional standards; promote the economic security of all faculty; help the university community organize to make our goals a reality; and ensure the university’s contribution to equitable social change in the Rochester community and beyond.
Faculty members may call on AAUP officers or individual members for advice and assistance or professional support. The chapter will assist individual faculty members when there is a probability that academic freedom or due process rights have been violated.
